Weather Report and Thank You

North Carolina Snowstorm

This is not funny! The picture on the left is the scene outside my front door this morning. So far, we have received at least three inches of snow in Raleigh with another couple of inches still to fall.

To be sure, this is a significant weather event for this part of the country. We don’t get a lot of snow around here, so the municipalities just don’t have a lot of equipment to deal with it. The result is businesses and schools have been closed, and traffic is down to almost nothing on the streets.

Having said that, the local news coverage is enough to drive a sane person totally over the edge. Picture if you will, a reporter standing outside, in the dark, on a local street. He is bending over, pointing at the snow on the street say something like, “This is snow that has fallen in the last few minutes.” Evidently, he was afraid viewers would think they were showing us pictures of rose petals dumped on the ground! All of the television stations had similar “reporting” going on…inventing news where there really wasn’t any.

The best thing about this weather event is that it has given many North Carolinians the perfect excuse to stay home today and watch the historic events in Washington, D.C., as Barak Obama is inaugurated our 44th President. There have been volumes written in the last few days about the significance of this event, and I can’t really add anything eloquent to what has already been said, so I’ll just say that I join in the optimism that perhaps real change can now take place and the myriad of problems we face in the United States and the world will be addressed in a meaningful way.

Recognition

diamond_award_2k8A fellow North Carolinian, and in fact a fellow resident of Raleigh, has honored this blog as a Diamond in the Rockpile: Class of 2008. I am truly honored to receive this award, mostly because it is a no-strings-attached kind of award. What I mean by that is, this is not an award to be passed along, it is not done to promote the originator’s own blog, and there are no other expectations attached to it. My friend, Mojo, at Why? What Have You Heard? created this award to recognize blogs of merit that he has discovered in his travels through the blogosphere. I hope you will check out the post outlining his ten choices for this award and check out some of the other blogs that share this honor. He really did pick out some diamonds in the rough.

Thank you, Mojo, for including me in this honor. I am humbled by your description of my blog and my photographic efforts. Like most, I am probably my own harshest critic. It is gratifying to have someone express appreciation for my efforts the way that you have. As you mention, there are literally millions of blogs out there, with many being added every day. To be singled out at any level is truly an honor. But to be honored for my photographic talents by someone as equally talented is truly special. I can’t express adequately what this means to me. I hope you understand how much I appreciate this.

By the way, Mojo, I actually began life in Wyoming, but I did move to North Carolina from Indiana. I spent the bulk of my life in Illinois before that. But you are correct, I got to North Carolina as quick as I could. And I definitely have found where I belong.

I’m going to close out this post with the rationale that Mojo gave in his origninal post for honoring Tarheel Ramblings with this award. I hope my readers will take some time to check out his blog.

Lee’s Tarheel Ramblings was a recommendation from a friend that’s become a regular stop on my touring of the blogosphere. A little bit more than simply a photo blog, this is a slice of life in my home state presented the way a native would do it, even though Lee originally entered this world in Indiana. He wasn’t born here, but apparently he got here as fast as he could, and his angle on the area is usually unique and always interesting. Lee’s another photoblogger that doesn’t mind sharing his “trade secrets” with the rest of us, and his photographic prowess is impressive enough that we take notice of how he does what he does. Like all the best photographers, he’s got a keen eye for things that most people miss.

• You hate it? Ill take it!

• I agree with Meleah. You are awesomeness. I bow to it.
• Lee
Coming from you, My Queen, that is high praise indeed. And I appreciate it.
• nice to meet another 'diamond in the rough' ... Mojo is right ... again

Thank you very much, Daryl, and thanks for stopping by.
• Cool! I just love new fallen snow, so pretty and pristine! I've been scrolling around and can see why Mojo awarded you, lovely!

• Lee
Thank you for stopping by and saying hello, Lisa. Mojo was very kind in his praise, and I appreciate his praise. Coming from a photographer of his caliber, I am truly humbled by his remarks.

As for the snow, it is pretty...when it first falls. But I'm over it after the first five minutes. :D
• Hi! I've been eyeballing your stuff via Linda and, if I can remember, would like to join you on Sundays! I'll have to go about finding more scenery - but it won't be as good as yours and Linda's!
Our local weather guys are hysterical. We get a drop of rain and we go into "Storm Watch." They wouldn't know real weather if it bit them in the butt! I would like just a wee bit of that snow, though...we in a drought situation.
~~~Blessings~~~
• Lee
Hi, Gracie, and welcome to Tarheel Ramblings! I'd be thrilled to have you join in the Sunday Scenery fun. The meme got started largely because Linda started participating and pointing people over here. To be honest, I started doing the Sunday Scenery posts as a way of allowing me to post without actually having to write anything, because most of the time there is no narrative in the post. Anyway, I'm thrilled that others want to participate.
By the way, the scenery part of the meme is interpreted very loosely for this meme. The photographs can be scenes from where you live, where you've visited, or just something you've captured with your camera you want to share with others. Don't get too hung up on the "scenic" aspect. :D
• Hi Lee,
Thanks for stopping by!
Sounds like your snow was about four weeks too late. You could have had a white Christmas. ;)
And if you can believe it, I think our local news reporters are even worse, but maybe everyone thinks that way.
Mega-congrats on your award!
I am so glad your wife isn't Paris Hilton. But probably not half as happy as you are! (The rest of you will have to visit Steve's blog to figure out what we're talking about. :D )
• My sister's flight yesterday out of Charlotte, NC was delayed about 90 minutes while they de-iced the plane. Brrr. It's cold here, too. But al least we do not have snow!
WillThink4Wines last blog post..refrigerators!
• Lee
Yikes! It took 90 minutes to de-ice her plane? I didn't think it was that bad here. :D
• What the hell! Please send ME some snow. My son is dying to shovel peoples driveways to make a few bucks!
And WHOA! Nice award! You are awesomeness.
• Lee
Meleah, my dear, you can have absolutely every flake that is supposed to come this direction from now on. Have I mentioned lately that I hate snow? I HATE SNOW!
• Hey there, Lee. I wanted to drop by and share my heartfelt congratulations with you for being part of Mojo's group of blog-honorees. Your work is wonderfully evocative, and I can't help but feel immediately at home here, as if there's a commonality of vision that seems very familiar to me. Gotta love serendipity, eh?
As I'm Canadian, I'm no stranger to The Weather Story. Journalists here fight each other to NOT be assigned the obligatory weather story, as if it's the on-air kiss of death to say something interesting about something which, frankly, isn't. I always find it neat to see how media in areas that don't get a lot of snow cover the event. By looking over your shoulder, I'll venture one word: "badly".
A delight "meeting" you. Can't wait to see more!
Carmis last blog post..Treasure hunter
• Lee
Carmi, thank you so much. I appreciate your kind words, and I appreciate your visit which reminded me to check out the other blogs that Mojo honored. I really feel like I'm in very good company.
Speaking of weather stories, it get's really interesting around here during hurricanse season. We used to really make fun of the newspeople doing hurricane stories...until Hurricane Fran hit here in 1996.
• Ah ! I see you've got my package ! I sent it express with a Storm ;)
Now that I know who is responsible, just remember what they say about paybacks!
• Are you going to tell me that Wolf Blitzer didn't leave his coverage of the inauguration to come down there and cover your snowfall?!? Had it been a slow news day, he just might have, ya know!
Personally, I've had more than enough snow for this winter but alas, it's only mid-January and no doubt there is more in store for us whether we like it or not. I'm just happy that you folks in the Tarheel State got the chance to experience winter's wonders with us!
Congrats on your well-deserved award - I love the ones that come along with no strings attached like that!
Lindas last blog post..Inaugural Irritations
• Lee
Can you believe it? Wolf put the inauguration ahead of the weather in North Carolina. I just don't get it. I mean, there's an inauguration every four years. Come to think of it, the last snow of any note we had here was four years ago as well. :D
• Oh I feel so bad for you with that avalanche of snow..no really I do really..:))) as I shovel through six feet of drifts my heart goes out to you...:)))
robert bournes last blog post..Two Souls Book in Progress installment four
• Lee
Everything is relative, Robert. For me, this was an avalanche of snow. For a hearty Canadian redneck such as yourself...not so much. :D
• The local news is sometimes like a comedy show the way it almost invents news!
Congratulations on a very well deserved award! I still can't get your 'Spice processing plant' photos out of my head :O)
Babs - photoblogs last blog post..Mellow Yellow Monday - Playdoh
• Lee
Inventing news is exactly what they do. The other thing that gets to me about reports is the propensity they have to ask stupid questions over and over and over again. During the coverage of today's events, Sen. Kennedy had a health issue and was taken out. There was one reporter who resorted to asking the everyone who would speak to him the same question about how they felt, or their ideas on what happened. I wanted to drive to Washington, track this guy down and slap some sense into his head.
• This is exactly the kind of reason I watch so little television. But your description cracked me up -- all the more so for its accuracy.
If I'm not mistaken, this is the first frozen precipitation we've had since the Second Coronation of Bush The Younger isn't it? those folks who live around here will remember that as "The Little Blizzard That Could". About 1/2" of snow-cum-ice that crippled a city by turning every single road surface into a rink the NHL would be proud of.
Somehow I can't help but be struck by the symmetry.
Mojos last blog post..Sticky: Save the Date!
• Lee
I think you're correct about the last inauguration. I had pretty much forgotten that. In fact, the contrast between the interest in that event and today's is amazing.
• That is exactly how my local tv stations cover a snow storm! I always feel bad for the poor sap who has to stand outside and periodically announce, "Still snowing; back to you, Rick!"
Congratulations on the award!
Mama Zens last blog post..Who Are These Joneses, Anyway?
• Lee
It is just mind numbing that they put so much energy into being so irrelavant during these weather events. I'm not saying I, personally, have a better way of covering weather stories, but I'm sure one exists.
