Sally Field was beside herself when she uttered this phrase upon winning her second Oscar. I can kind of understand the emotions and feelings behind the words. To be recognized by fellow bloggers is an honor that’s hard to explain to anyone who doesn’t participate in the blogging community. There is so much talent out there that it would be easy to be intimidated. Instead, there is mutual support and admiration because we understand the effort that goes into the words that appear in each and every post.
I’ve been honored twice in the last week, and I would like to acknowledge the recognition that has been directed my way.
Being somewhat twisted myself, I have always appreciated the way that Dawn, the author of Twisted Sister, thinks. To be considered a million dollar friend by her is a great honor, and the feeling is mutual. In her post of August 18th, Dawn said:
“There are many ways to be a blogging friend… but I am simply amazed at how many of you email me and share your thoughts, your lives and sometimes your heart. Some of you go well beyond the call of duty and have touched me deeply.
You all know who you are!
Some of you have been faithful readers and commenters for which I am extremely grateful. And if I’ve left anyone out I can assure you it’s not intentional and I’ll apologize in advance…”
Dawn received the award from Ann, at A Nice Place in the Sun and quickly passed it on to her million dollar friends, and I was included. Thank you Dawn!
Here are my thoughts:
A million dollar friend to me is someone who takes the time to get to know you on more than a superficial level. It is someone who is willing to put for the effort it takes to be a friend with no thought of what they’re going to get out of it. In many ways, that applies to most of the readers who regularly leave comments on my posts: Jaffer, Dawn, Kathy, Queen Mimi, Linda, Robert, Meleah, Vixen, Mike, Drowsey Monkey, Olga the Traveling Bra and many others. If I left anyone out, please don’t take it personally. Know that I appreciate anyone who honors my by take a few minutes to share in my world. Thank you for your friendship!
Queen Mimi of Bloggingham Palace, in the Kingdom of North Carolina, a fellow Tarheel, bestowed the My Blog Rocks award on me. This came my way on Thursday, August 21. In bestowing this award on me, Her Highness caused crimson to appear in my cheeks with the following reason for her choosing me as a recipient:
“Lee at Tarheel Ramblings – OK. For starters he’s a Tarheel. Need I say more? A tarheel blogger! That’s so cool! I knew I liked Lee from the get-go (that’s a Tarheelism). He writes about his travels in the communing camper in the woods where he gets away to be alone and think about the Big Picture, he captures nature and everything in between with his wonderful camera (we’re so lucky he shares the pics with us) and writes eloquently about politics and past musical endeavors and his son…..who just completed basic Navy training. He’s proud and scared all at once. What makes it “real” is that he’s not ashamed to admit he is. The thing with Lee is that I just smell “real” – no agenda – no fluff – no pretense – and those bloggers can be hard to come by at times. You know I’m telling the truth! I’m glad he’s in my neck of the woods. I hope I get to meet him and his lovely wife one of these days (and Deana too who lives nearby).
Lee encourages my writing – and me- when I need it.
I need it often. Thank you my friend.”
Such high praise coming from royalty is very humbling. The nice thing is that I can say that Mimi pretty much captured what I endeavor to be about. It’s nice to know that I’m meeting my objectives in writing the words that appear on this page.
So, thank you, Dawn and Queen Mimi for bestowing these awards on me. This recognition is just a little added motivation to keep trying to entertain and share in the posts that I place here several times a week. I’ll keep trying to live up to your faith in me.
