Without further ado, here are Seven Weird Things About Me:
- I went back to college at the age of 40 to complete a bachelor’s degree at Purdue University. I went part-time for three years and full-time for one full year to complete the degree.
- At the age of 43, I moved into a graduate student dorm on campus at Purdue while I completed my degree. I was the oldest person on my floor, but not the oldest person in the dorm. There were two ladies in their 60s who were also pursuing degrees. However, theirs were graduate degrees.
- I met my wife on America Online in a chat room for beta testers of the AOL software. We were both involved in beta testing so we could get cheap access to the Internet.
- When I moved to North Carolina in 1996, I drove a 1991 Pontiac LeMans and pulled the smallest U-Haul trailer they had. Going through the mountains in Tennessee and western North Carolina I drove as slow as 10 miles per hour at times, barely clearing the crest of some pretty steep areas of the mountains. That poor car almost died in the mountains.
- I have had five distinct careers since leaving college the first time in 1972. I have worked as a machinist in a factory for three years; a manager of a commercial loan office for five years; a quality control manager for an agricultural feed mill for ten years; a youth minister for nine years; a director of three group homes that provided services for youths with mental health and behavior problems for two years; and finally I have worked in Information Technology, first as a developer and then as a project manager, for the past ten years.
- I drive a four wheel drive Chevrolet S-10 pickup in a region of the United States that hardly ever gets snow. So, I rarely have an opportunity to utilize the full features of that truck.
- My children would say that I am completely weird with a completely weird sense of humor. They probably think that because when they were teenagers I drove them and their friends to different events with the radio blaring, singing at the top of my lungs, butt dancing in the front seat. Go figure. Personally, I think they’re weird.
One of the rules for this meme is to tag someone else, so I’m going to tag:
- Kathy at The Junk Drawer
- Meleah at Mama Mia…Mea Culpa
- Susie at Susie’s Thoughts
As always, participation in memes is completely voluntary and if you choose not to, I won’t point out to the world what terrible slackers you are.
Have a great weekend…at least what’s left of it.
P.S. Oh yeah, the degree was in Child Development and Family Studies and I graduated with honors in December of 1996.
