Drowsey Monkey tagged me for the Seven Weird Things About Me meme after she was tagged by Nina at The Alien Next Door.
Here are the rules:
Cite and link to your source (me), then enjoy writing about 7 Weird Things About Yourself, then tag some people & help spread the weirdness.
Without further ado, here are Seven Weird Things About Me:
- I went back to college at the age of 40 to complete a bachelor’s degree at Purdue University. I went part-time for three years and full-time for one full year to complete the degree.
- At the age of 43, I moved into a graduate student dorm on campus at Purdue while I completed my degree. I was the oldest person on my floor, but not the oldest person in the dorm. There were two ladies in their 60s who were also pursuing degrees. However, theirs were graduate degrees.
- I met my wife on America Online in a chat room for beta testers of the AOL software. We were both involved in beta testing so we could get cheap access to the Internet.
- When I moved to North Carolina in 1996, I drove a 1991 Pontiac LeMans and pulled the smallest U-Haul trailer they had. Going through the mountains in Tennessee and western North Carolina I drove as slow as 10 miles per hour at times, barely clearing the crest of some pretty steep areas of the mountains. That poor car almost died in the mountains.
- I have had five distinct careers since leaving college the first time in 1972. I have worked as a machinist in a factory for three years; a manager of a commercial loan office for five years; a quality control manager for an agricultural feed mill for ten years; a youth minister for nine years; a director of three group homes that provided services for youths with mental health and behavior problems for two years; and finally I have worked in Information Technology, first as a developer and then as a project manager, for the past ten years.
- I drive a four wheel drive Chevrolet S-10 pickup in a region of the United States that hardly ever gets snow. So, I rarely have an opportunity to utilize the full features of that truck.
- My children would say that I am completely weird with a completely weird sense of humor. They probably think that because when they were teenagers I drove them and their friends to different events with the radio blaring, singing at the top of my lungs, butt dancing in the front seat. Go figure. Personally, I think they’re weird.
One of the rules for this meme is to tag someone else, so I’m going to tag:
- Kathy at The Junk Drawer
- Meleah at Mama Mia…Mea Culpa
- Susie at Susie’s Thoughts
As always, participation in memes is completely voluntary and if you choose not to, I won’t point out to the world what terrible slackers you are.
Have a great weekend…at least what’s left of it.
P.S. Oh yeah, the degree was in Child Development and Family Studies and I graduated with honors in December of 1996.

Is that 7 weird things, or 70? Cuz you know I could just go on all day.
Kathy’s last blog post..We Can Hear You
Kathy: Come on, aren’t you exaggerating just a little bit? I bet you don’t have any more than 65 weird things you could write about!
And I do hope you know I’m just kidding.
those aren’t weird…they’re actually kinda cool! I went back to university when I was 32…so I know how you feel. But I loved it! Wish I could do it again.
You’re had an amazing career(s)! Very diverse.
Thanks for playing!

Drowsey: You missed the part about butt dancing in the car, didn’t you?
Jaffer: If you’ve got back problems, the mattress on the floor makes perfect sense.
Robert: The ’91 LeMans was a sentimental thing, because my first brand new car was a ’72 LeMans. It was an Anaconda Gold, two-door coupe. A very sweet car!
I agree with DrowseyMonkey that those are cool things – I’d do them too !
You want to know weird ? For no good reason, I sleep with a mattress on the floor even though I’ve got a bed !
Jaffer’s last blog post..Let’s sing with Drew Carey !

dawn’s last blog post..Weekend Funnies
Dawn: Actually, I’m pretty damn proud of my weirdness too!
It’s served me well through the years, and as long as God has a sense of humor I’m in pretty good shape.
Susie: Congratulations on being back in university! I really enjoyed all the work finishing my bachelor’s degree. My area of study was more common for females than males, but I was looked up to by my peers, no matter what their age. I learned a lot by mentoring others and it gave me a fantastic sense of accomplishment. There was a big difference between my first attempt at college than my second.
I’m back at university right now at the age of 45. This is a special group for “older” people, so I’m not the oldest.
I don’t think that was weird at all. Everything was pretty normal in my world.
Thanks for the tag, I’ll see what I can do about it.
Susie’s last blog post..Dare to dream
Well I am so glad you shared these fascinating tidbits about yourself!
Most interesting to me was how you met your wife, and your degree in Child Development and Family Studies.

I thoroughly enjoyed this Lee. You are quite the interesting guy!
You’ve inspired me to think about going back to school myself. I turn 40 next year.
Maybe when I don’t have little ones at home any more.
Oh, and I love butt dancing. In fact, I’m doing it now! (hehehehe)
Paula’s last blog post..I Heard a Rumour
Paula: Thank you!! And it’s great to hear from you! It’s never too late to think about getting a degree, and sometimes it’s easier to do it one class at a time.
